"This is a well structured and engaging historical fantasy that kept me guessing until the very end."
In 1920s London where everyone is obsessed with the discoveries of Egypt, Archaeology student Rom is about to uncover her own magical and deadly family secrets. Archaeology student Andromeda Godden (Rom) is drawn into a mysterious investigation of her family’s legacy, revealing deadly truths and caught up in a world of alchemy, shapeshifters and blood magic. This is a twisting historical fantasy that would appeal to readers interested in stories with family secrets, mythology and mystery. It was interesting to see the family dynamic between Rom, her brother Alec and stepbrother Morgan unfold as we read and they are all drawn into the mysteries left behind by Rom’s grandfather. Rare Birds is a multifaceted narrative with a varying cast of characters. As the characters change form and are sometimes addressed with different names I would say that at times care and concentration is required to keep a track of the storyline. The story is set in the 1920s, though the language seemed to be quite modern so it was easy to follow and immerse yourself in Rom’s story. As the narrative progresses you don’t know who you can trust and new revelations bring whole new perspectives to the book. This is a well structured and engaging historical fantasy that kept me guessing until the very end.
